 Tomato 'Black Sea Man' |
Preferred Situation: Sunny and warm
Description: Small plants with medium-sized deep brown fruits, and lovely rich flavor. Looks incredibly odd when blanched and peeled; revealing skeleton-like veins under the skin.
Potato leaf, but determinate. Annual.
CERTIFIED ORGANIC
Notes: 75 days to harvest from the date of transplant. Determinate plants are relatively short. Good producer.
Cultivation: I like to start tomato plants indoors, usually two months before you plan to plant them out in the garden. Many people suggest that you can put the young plants out after the danger of frost has past, but I’ve always found that waiting until nighttime temperatures don’t drop below 55°F results in much happier plants that will start producing sooner. Your little seedlings may not be so little by the time you’re ready to plant them out, but with tomatoes that’s never a problem: remove the lower leaves and plant the seedlings deeper – the buried stem will send out roots and a much deeper and healthier root system will result. (Mind you, this only works for tomatoes)
