Coffee, its for more than just the face. Here its part of the morning ritual where one can organize the days events while sipping on a steaming cup of java. Not to long ago, out of pure deparation for a caffeine fix, some not so optimum brand was purchased just to get us through the day before heading into town for proper supplies. The brew was awful and no one here deserved such treatment, so we tucked the can in the greenhouse to be used at some point of time as we're not ones to waste anything. During one Seedy Saturday (which are great places for learning stuff) I heard that caffeine does a real number on slugs and snails. Sure enough, we had a bit of a slug problem in the spring, so we top dressed some of our seedling pots with the unbrewed coffee grounds, the slugs who touched the coffee grounds almost turned on their heels and ran. Those without running shoes went quickly to the big garden in the sky. How quickly? It was within minutes. I was really surprised on how lethal it is. So if slugs are your personal bugbear, try dry unused coffee grounds. Its the caffeine that works wonders, so get some cheap stuff and sprinkle at will!!!! In spirit of recycling, we're now using old coffee grounds from a local brew shop. They are glad to get rid of their used grounds and save dumpster/trash removal costs. I'm sure coffee shops near you will gladly give you their used grounds if you can develop a friendly mutually benefiting relationship.
