 Trillium kurabayashii |
Native Region: Southwest Oregon to Northwest California Zone Range: 6-9 Preferred Climate: Dappled shade of open forests; well draining acidic deep humus soils Harvest Date: Wednesday 12 October, 2011 Seed count: 12-15
Description: A rare trillium with great 22 cm wide mottled leaves and dark wine red sessile flowers (stemless emerging from the base of the leaves). A wonderful addition to a dappled shady spot in the garden just make sure its planted in a promenent place so its beauty can be continually enjoyed. Can make a fairly large clump over time. These are large plants reach 60cm in height so they're unlikely to be overlooked. Needs deep soil as the rhizomes sink themselves as an anchor. Most vigorous of all the species we grow.
Notes: Seed is from cultivated plants. Pretreated with Skookum Grow.
Cultivation: Seed looses viability when kept dry so we store it in moist peat! Upon arrival, sow in a baggie with 2-3 tbsp of moistened peat. Cold stratify 3 months, then warm stratify 1-3 months. Place baggie back into the fridge for another 2 months of cold stratification, I've had a few sprouted in the fridge so keep an eye on the seed prickout and plant the seedlings. Give another round of warm stratification; often germination is quite prompt (1-3 weeks). Prick out and transplant into pots or a nursery bed. Do not let seedlings freeze! This breviated warm/cold stratifcation cycle shortens the normal 18 month cycle by half or better. Trials show that seed will not germinate unless given warm stratification. Never disturb seedlings for at least 2 years after transplanting.
