 Dianthus carthusianorum |
Native Region: Central/Southeast Europe Zone Range: 5-9 Preferred Climate: Sunny sites; well draining poor soils. Harvest Date: Thursday 06 November, 2008 Seed count: 40-50
Description: A tall pink with thin flowering stems reach 60 cm from a basal cluster of strap-like dark green leaves. Bright medium pink five petaled smallish flowers have dark and white to pale pink markings are gathered in dense clusters atop the thin stems. Blooms right up to frost. Trouble free.
Notes: Adds a splash of colour to a grass garden as this Dianthus has very little spread and will fit in any narrow sunny dry spot.
Cultivation: Very fine seed. Mix with a small amount of sand to evenly distribute over sowing surface. Don't sow much deeper than this. Tamp firm. Keep moist. Germinates readily at 20 C. Seedlings enjoy lots of indirect light. Prick out when at a 4-5 true leaf stage to final sitting. Will form a basal clump of leaves for the first year and will bloom the following. It may bloom in its first year. Also one of the few plants I can confidently say that you can simply direct sow with good success given its preferred climate. Grows well with Cistus, Salvia officinalis, and Monarda fistulosa.
