 Lilium ''Black Red'' |
Origin: Garden cultivar Preferred Situation: Full to semi sun; well draining humus rich soil. Harvest Date: Saturday 19 November, 2011 Seed count: 15-20
Description: An Asiatic lily with incredibly dark red blooms perhaps the darkest available. Sturdy plants hold the heavily scented blooms aloft. Easy to grow. This seed is of deliberate crossing of dark red and near black forms. Not deer proof. Tolerates summer drought, but not exessively dry hot prolonged soil, so some supplimental water might be required.
Cultivation: Epigeal germination. Place seed on prepared medium surface mist well and cover with a sand/peat mix (equal parts) 5 mm deep. Mist well again. A plastic cover will help conserve medium surface moisture, but keep moist. Don't spill water when watering as this will/can dislodge the seed and cause seedling death. Give gentle warmth 20-25 C for germination. Should sprout in 30-60 days. Give strong indirect light and let the kids sit in their germination pot for a year so the bulbs have time to grow. Half strength liquid low nitrogen fertlizer every 2-3 weeks is helpful.
