Achlys triphylla (br)

Vanilla Leaf

ca$ 3.50
Achlys triphylla (br)
Achlys triphylla (br)
Native Region: Coastal Pacific Northwest
Zone Range: 6-9
Preferred Climate: Semi sun; well draining humus rich soil

Description:
One nice rhizome. Native herbaceous perennial to 30 cm tall. This lovely plant with its large characteristic three leaves only occurs in a narrow band of the Coastal Mountain Range. Makes large colonies via runners and is a very attractive summer ground cover growing happily with rhodos and other open woodland spaces. Harvest its leaves in Autumn and hang; its vanilla scent is more pronounced when dry.

Notes:
Price also refects shipping costs. We promote this species in our garden under the shade of big leaf maples, tall Douglas firs, and rhododendrons with lots of half composted bark mulch. Over the years the few plants happily spread into a pale blue/green carpet. Now we have enough to share with others.

Cultivation:
International customers need a phyto to import. In general, if you can grow rhodos, you can grow this. When happy, it spreads in all directions via shallow rhizomes in half composted moisture retaining bark mulch and doesn’t need fertilizer, just deep moisture retaining mulch, leaf mould, and/or humus rich soil. Drought proof when established. First Nations harvested, dried and hung leaves to perfume the house with their sweet vanilla scent. When collecting these plants in the fall, the few remaining leaves perfume the entire greenhouse for weeks. Deer proof, pest free. Planting information provided with order. Non Wildcrafted (all of our native plants are nursery grown)
