Description:
Two bareroot trees. Good roots. Seed grown...no clones. A fast growing majestic tree, once made up 25% of the Eastern North American forests, was almost lost from the world when an imported blight struck in the 1930's. Now rare. Bears sweet nuts in a few short years. Can grow to 30 meters tall with a 10 meter spread over time producing more and more harvestable delicous nuts. Minimum height from root crown to stem tip: 30 cm.
Notes:
NOT to the USA. You need two for proper nut production as these plants don't recongize their own pollen (self sterile). Fall shipping preferred. Conservation minded individuals or groups involved in reviving this species...e-mail us for special request. Bears some of the tastiest fat-free nuts you can find. Can bear as young as 3 years old.
Cultivation:
How I seat plants that will reach this size: dig a deep hole and sift the soil using a coarse heavy duty metal hardware screen into a wheel barrow. Amend the soil with compost, greensand, alfalfa, and some bone meal (no lime!). Mix well. Dump and pack of the amended soil back in the hole but leave enough room for the root system. Seat your plant, pack more soil around the roots until its properly seated with the crown just under the soil. Mulch well and water. Provide water until the plant is established in a few years. Don't prune living growth as it needs these leaves to gather the sun's energy to establish. You may have to stake the tree for the first year.
