Liriodendron tulipifera (br)
Liriodendron tulipifera (br)
Origin: Eastern North America
Zone Range: 4-9
Preferred Situation: Full sun; well draining humus rich soil.
Harvest Date: Saturday 20 October, 2007

Description:
One bare root seedling (30 cm). Strong straight growing lovely hardwood with a pyrimidal symetrical form. Lovely leaves are size of my outspread hand. The distinctive squarish lobed leaves are the size of my outspread hand (size 7 mudgrubbers) makes it quite unique. Starting in May, the cupped large tulip shaped sweetly fragrant flowers start off greenish, but by June, open to a yellowish green with an orange band inside. Pollinators are rewarded with nectar produced in relative abundance. In autumn, the foliage turns a golden yellow. Truely spectacular. Grows to 30 meters in height with a 10 meter spread.

Notes:
Price also refects shipping costs. Easy to grow. Last year's seedlings doubled their size to 1.3 meters or better and will do so again next year. This bare root offering is this year's seedlings. Organically grown with good roots. Enquire about bulk purchasing...the more you buy the better pricing will be.

Cultivation:
How I seat plants that will reach this size: dig a deep hole and sift the soil using a coarse heavy duty metal hardware screen into a wheel barrow. Amend the soil with compost, greensand, alfalfa, and some bone meal (no lime!). Mix well. Dump and pack of the amended soil back in the hole but leave enough room for the root system. Seat your plant, pack more soil around the roots until its properly seated with the crown just under the soil. Mulch well and water. Provide water until the plant is established in a few years. Don't prune! When unpacking your tree(s) set them in a bucket of water while preparing or doing the finishing touches to the transplant hole. Take a look at the roots as they should be thick and bright. Don't overly handle. When seating your tree each tier must be spread out on its own soil level not simply jammed in the hole and filled in as this leads to more tree failure than anything else! Yes, this applies to all bare root trees, shrubs and perennials too.
