Acer pseudosieboldianum
Acer pseudosieboldianum

Native Region: China & Korea
Zone Range: 4-9
Preferred Climate: Full to semi shade; well draining humus rich acidic soil
Harvest Date: Sunday 12 December, 2010
Seed count: 15-20

Description:
A uncommon Asian maple with 7 to 13 distinct sharply lobed leaves of a lovely green which, in the fall, become blazingly vivid in colours ranging from yellow to orange and scarlet. Extremely hardy and ideal for northern gardens where Japanese maples (ie. Acer palmatum) fail to survive the winter. Unique features are purple flowers and white sticky hairs on new growth. Upright growth to 10 meters in height and half the spread. Reportedly hardy to -40C in a sheltered location or -25C in an open landscape.

Cultivation:
Fresh seed. Will be cold moist stored as all Acer seed lose viability when dry. Place seed in tepid water, sow sinkers immediately. Soak floating seed 4-24 hours until it sinks and sow immediately. Sow thinly at 6 mm deep in a sandy peat layer; tamp firm. Cold strafify for 60-120 days. Keep moist. Add a thin layer of fine mulch. Don't let germinating seed freeze, dry out or migrate onto the medium surface as this is fatal. After cold stratification period is over, expose to spring conditions to promote germination. Good indirect light is best for seedlings. Protect seed/seedlings from varmits. I prick out seedlings when dormant and grow in individual pots for first 2-3 years for best results.

Harvest Date: Sunday 12 December, 2010
