Description: A more apt common name should be 'Spicy Onion Tree' for its new shoots taste somewhat like onions with schezwan pepper making useful as food and a spice...a useful addition for an edible landscape. If not harvested and left to mature, the young pinkish hued 30 cm long pinnate leaves become a lovely green in summer. Fast growing tree that takes well to pruning if you want to keep it from growing too tall. Dark brown bark has a lovely reddish cast. Tolerant of many soil types, but not extremely dry hot areas.
Cultivation: Easy to grow. Surface sow thinly on prepared medium of loosened sand & finely milled peat. Mist into suface. Clear plastic cover improves success. Germinates quickly at 20C. Fastest germination method with near +90% germination: soak seed 24 hours changing the soak water at least twice then baggie sow in moist milled peat. Provide gentle warmth (20C) and it should germinate in 5-7 days. Prick out, transplant and provide strong indirect light.
