 Acer ginnala |
Native Region: Northern China/Russia Zone Range: 3-8 Preferred Climate: Full sun to semi shade; well draining average soil. Harvest Date: Friday 14 October, 2011 Seed count: 15-20
Description: A very hardy small tree to 4 meters tall with half the spread. In Spring, leaf colour is pale green with scarlet/orange tips then become a dark glossy green. The Autumn colour is an incredible vivid red that almost looks artifical. Leaves are sharply trilobed. Fragrant white flower clusters in May-June are loved by winged creatures. Scarlet seed wings contrast nicely with the foliage.
Notes: Used extensively in urban planting such as parking lots to provide some shade. Suitable for bonsai. Tough species. Summer drought tolerant.
Cultivation: Stratifying fresh seed. Sow immediatly upon receiving for Spring germination. Sow 6 mm deep; tamp medium firm and apply thin top coat of mulch. Keep moist or sow in baggie with moist peat/sand and warm stratify 30 days. Sow (mentioned above) and cold stratify 90-120 days (can keep in baggie to do this too then sow when cold stratification period is over). Sometime stubborn to germinate, so you may have to wait two years for all the seed to germinate, but overall vigour is good. Fast growing landscape trees so its worth the wait.
