 Lindera angustifolia |
Native Region: China Zone Range: 6-9 Preferred Climate: Full to semi sun; well draining humus rich acidic soils Harvest Date: Tuesday 15 November, 2011 Seed count: 10-12
Description: Fine gracile sinuous branching from this multi-stemmed beauty. Early spring blossoms of dense fragrant yellow flower clusters bring joy to the eye and to the nectar seekers. Followed by glossy narrow blue-green leaves with a silvery reverse...very nice flashing in a breeze. In fall, large clusters of berries ripen from green to red to black, while the leaves become a tan before turning brilliant scarlet and orange. Leaves can persist into early winter for colour. Grows to 3 meters in height with equal spread.
Notes: Gendered species. Sweetly fragrant roots and spicy leaves. Used in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Cultivation: Cold moist stored seed. Great success germinating these in the very first try. Continue its 4 month cold stratification cycle (began upon collection in late October) and provide gentle warmth (20C) to germinate. I did these using the baggie method and transplanted as they sprouted into a 3 gallon nursery pot in a unheated greenhouse with lots of bright indirect light. Grew suprisingly fast....two year old plants can reach 1 metre in height...in the nursery pot! Sow thinly.
