 Syringa josikaea |
Native Region: Central-Eastern Europe Zone Range: 5-7 Preferred Climate: Semi sun; well draining humus rich soil. Harvest Date: Sunday 30 September, 2007 Seed count: 25-30
Description: Open 20 cm clusters of mauve-purple sweetly fragrant flowers with ivory undertones cover the new growth starting late May. Multistemmed arching branches reach 4 meters in height and 4-5 meters in spread. Lovely when growing in a 'hedge' with similar sized shrubs. Hummingbird magnet. Problem free.
Notes: Though its considered to only have heat hardiness to zone 7, it grows well in a cool site in zone 8 or better climates. We're zone 8 and it perfoms wonderfully in our nitrogen poor soils but it is given even moisture. Supplimental water might be needed during drought during the growing season.
Cultivation: Soak 24 hours in room temperature water. Place seed in baggie filled with equal mix of moist coarse sand and peat or sow 5 mm deep. Keep moist. Cold stratify 30-90 days in the fridge or outdoors (do not freeze). When cold stratification period is over, provide temps of 14-18 C to germinate. Days to germination: 14-45 days. If sowing in a baggie, check seed in the fridge for early risers. If germinating in the baggie transplant sprouts as needed.
