 Digitalis ferruginea 'Gelber Herald' |
Native Region: Central to Eastern Europe Zone Range: 4-8 Preferred Climate: Full to semi sun; well draining garden soil. Harvest Date: Sunday 01 October, 2006 Seed count: 60-75
Description:
From a basal clump of oblong leaves, arrises a 1.5 meter tall unbranching flowering spike of yellowish bronze thumble shaped waxy blooms with rusty veining within. Short hairs mark the lower extended lip of the trumpet of these quazi erect flowers. A very exotic looking improved strain of the species. Hummingbird magnet.
Notes: Open pollinated in isolation. Treat like a short lived perennial or a biennial. Basal rosette of leaves form for the first year followed by flowering spikes the second. May die afte flowering (even if you deadhead). Sow every year so you will have a flowering display every year instead of alternating years of leaves or flowers. Can self sow.
Cultivation: Easy to start from seed. One of the few seed types I can confidently say that you will have great success by just broadcasting the seed on site. Don't cover seed as it needs light to germiante. Will germiante in 14-21 days at 20 C.
