Description:
A lovely rare maple related to Acer palmatum....but much bigger in all ways. Thick plamate leaves can reach 20 cm wide and first emerge purple-red, becoming blue-green in summer then brilliant scarlet in the autumn depending on the site. Clear jade green bark adds to its beauty. Native to the mountains of southern China, its quite adaptable as a garden specimen. Likes sun, but not hot sun. Provide some water in severe drought. Mature single to multistemmed plants can reach 15 meters in height with an half to equal spread.

Cultivation:
Fresh seed. Will be cold moist stored as all Acer seed lose viability when dry. Place seed in tepid water, sow sinkers immediately. Soak floating seed 12-24 hours until it sinks and sow immediately. Sow thinly at 6 mm deep in a sandy peat layer; tamp firm. Cold strafify for 60-120 days. Keep moist. Add a thin layer of fine mulch. Don't let germinating seed freeze, dry out or migrate onto the medium surface as this is fatal. After cold stratification period is over, expose to spring conditions to promote germination. Good indirect light is best for seedlings. Protect seed/seedlings from varmits. I prick out seedlings when dormant and grow in individual pots for first 2-3 years for best results.
