 Magnolia hybrids |
Native Region: Garden cultivars Zone Range: 5-9 Preferred Climate: Full to semi sun; well draining acidic soils Harvest Date: Monday 02 November, 2009 Seed count: 20-25
Description: This is a mix of hybrid magnolias. More often hybrids are vigorous and produces masses of sweetly fragrant blooms early in life. Often used as a landscape/street tree for its hardiness, natural pyrimidal form, and easy care. Being a hybrid bloom colour will vary in its seedlings from white to various shades of pink. Dense branching habit. Flowers in March before the leaves (heavy fuzz on the reverse) emerge. Trees can grow 5 meters in height with an equal spread.
Notes: The seed shapes are not uniform which my years of experience is telling me it is of mixed heritage of campbellii, kobus, denudata, sprengeri, and possibly sargentiana. Never lime magnolias as they need acidic soils to flourish. Open pollinated. Huge flowers held up well under the late snow only marring the petals slightly.
Cultivation: Fresh seed. Never let magnolia seed overly dry out as this kills the embryo. Sow immediately 2 cm deep, keep moist, keep the pot outside to finish the cold stratification cycle of 120 days. Sunlight inhibits germination. Most seed will germinate in May with the remaining the following May. Newly emerging seedlings need indirect light/dappled shade at first then stronger light as they put down a larger root system. Protect from nibbling pests two years. Note: seed beginning to sprout are too fragile to ship (and are all mine!). All magnolias growing in temperate regions have identical seed germination requirements where no special treatment is needed other than sowing and cold stratification (experience cold damp conditions).
