Description:
True to its common name, the sweetly scented white clusters of flowers offer abundant nectar and pollen to winged creatures in mid July to early August when most other plants have either finished flowering. An unusual lovely disease and pest-free tree with pinnate glossy dark green leaves. Fast grower; red to purple twigs and young stems. Invitingly smooth grey bark later in life. Blooms at an early age on new wood. Berries are much enjoyed by birds and other wildlife. Reaches 6-7 meters in height with an equal spread. Adapts to many soil types.
Cultivation:
Soak seed 24 hours. Cold stratify in a small quantity of moist peat/sand for 1-2 months (wrapping seed in a moistened coffee filter will prevent fine seed from being 'lost' in the medium. Prepare deep pot for nursery sowing and surface sow. Mist seed into prepared surface. May need light to germinate so barely cover. Keep moist with a plastic cover or something similar. Alternately sow outdoors in the fall or early winter. Sow thinly. Germinates readily at 20C. Fast grower and transplants well.
