Native Region: Northern Europe; North America; Siberia; Iceland Zone Range: 3-8 Preferred Climate: Semi sun; cool moisture retentive humus rich acidic soils Harvest Date: Sunday 06 December, 2009 Seed count: 25-30
Description: A small spreading perennial for cooler moist soils. Small nodding reddish-pink-purple flowers hang suspended upon the rounded lobed divided leaves by hairy dark red-purple stems. Its long bloom time (May to September) makes a great understory plant for shrubs, taller perennials or among at the front of a shady, cool border. Once used as a medicinal to soothe sore throats. Edible roots produces a tasty beverage, hense, its other common name.
Cultivation: Soak seed 24 hours. Give 30-45 days cold stratification. Germinate in cool temps not exceeding 25C. Its important to keep seed and seedlings moist during germination; a clear plastic cover can greatly improve success (as with all seed germination). Prick out seedlings when big enough to handle and transplant in their own pots. Once established, divide plants every 3-5 years to maintain vigour.
