Arbutus menziesii 15 grams

Arbutus; Pacific Madrone

ca$ 139.00
Seed count: 1000+
Arbutus menziesii 15 grams
Arbutus menziesii 15 grams
Native Region: Pacific Northwest Coast
Zone Range: 7-10
Preferred Climate: Full to semi sun; very well draining coarse poor soils
Harvest Date: Wednesday 02 November, 2011
Seed count: 1000+

Description:
15 grams of clean seed. Northern source (Vancouver Island). Seed gathered from plants exposed to full sun, wind, and temps of -12C (without wind chill) in winter. Evergreen. Sweet honey scented nectar filled flowers in spring followed by orange/red berries. Iron hard wood covered by lovely exfoliating bark.

Notes:
Seed extracted using non mechanical means. Labour intensive but results in no broken or damaged seeds.

Cultivation:
Soak seed 24 hours. Best if sown in containers. Sow thinly. Prepare container by filling with well draining gritty medium. Use sharp sand as the sowing surface. Press seed into sand. Do not cover. Keep moist, shaded, and cool. Cold stratify 40 days. Best grown in containers as large seedlings resent having their roots disturbed during transpanting so use minimal handling. Seat in their final growing position where their roots will not be disturbed. I haven't tried baggie sowing these, but I can't see where this technique would be a problem.

Harvest Date: Wednesday 02 November, 2011
