 Lycopersicon 'Legend' |
Origin: Another Dr Baggett of OSU creation. Zone Range: all Preferred Situation: Full sun; deep fertile evenly moist well draining soil. Harvest Date: Friday 25 January, 2008
Description: At last a blight resistant tomato! Vigorous plants produce all season long (sets fruit without pollen) so prune sparingly and use strong stakes as fruits average 8 ounces. Red meaty fruits are excellent for cooking, canning, dried, or simply as slicing tomato with very few seeds. Flavor is very good with the right blend of sugar and acid. September 2004 set a record for rain for that month and these plants, grown without cover produced right to frost without blemish. Prune only to promote air circulation as fruit production will continue through most of the summer.
Notes: Blight resistant; parthenocarpic; open pollinated.
Cultivation: Sow 5 mm deep. Keep moist; plastic cover improves success. Opt. germination temp: 18-25 C. Days to germ: 5-10. Bigger the roots at transplant (mid May) bigger the harvest. Prune sparingly. Protect from rain; water at plant base never foliage except foliar feeds. Heavy feeder; use balanced organic fertilizer. Excess nitrogen= leaves no fruit; no calcium=blossom end rot; extreme heat=blossom drop. Use strong supports to keep your plants & fruits off the ground. See our tomato article under 'Confessions of a Mad Gardener' for growing information.
