 Monarda fistulosa |
Native Region: North America. Zone Range: 3-9 Preferred Climate: Full/semi sun; average well draining soil. Harvest Date: Friday 11 November, 2011 Seed count: 100-150
Description: Stronger bergamont scented and taller than its shade loving Bee Balm cousin (Monarda didyma). Being from the prairie grasslands, this perennial naturalizes well in sunny sites and ordinary soils. Dense mophead clusters of pale mauve blooms are extremely attractive to hummingbirds and other nectar seekers from June to frost. Add leaves or flowers to your tea for your own 'Early Grey' blend. Tolerates seasonal drought well. Disease resistant. Our plants are from seed collected from the Alberta prairie. Grows to 2 meters. Strong wiry stalks hold up to windy sites.
Notes: Deer and pest proof.
Cultivation: Easy! Sow 4 mm deep. Keep moist; greater success with plastic cover. Opt. germination temp: 15-22 C. Days to germ: 7-21.
