Description: Big leaves on a big tree to 30 meters tall and 8 meters wide. This species grows quickly with a straight trunk with handsome bark. Leaves provide cool summer shade with its lovely green leaves where in Autumn becomes a dramatic bright yellow to orange colour. Provides nectar and pollen for many winged creatures. A local makes wonderful maple syrup from these trees.
Notes: Hand selected seed; germination cut rate gives 80%. Will be cold mosit stored to maintain viablilty. We've never noticed any of these trees break branches in heavy snow. Dense wood. Stools well. Easy to grow. Maintenance free. Leaves compost into wonderful mulch. Do not remove bristle like hairs on seed coat as this helps retain moisture for proper germination. Co evolved with our wacky climate of winter wet and summer drought.
Cultivation: Soak seed 24 hours in tepid water. Barely cover seed; tamp soil. Cold stratify for 60-90 days. Needs light and gentle heat to germinate (minic early spring conditions). Grow in deep containers if not planting in final position. Protect from nibbling varmits.
