 Passiflora incarnata |
Native Region: Eastern North America Zone Range: 6-9 Preferred Climate: Full/semi sun; well draining fertile soil Harvest Date: Thursday 09 December, 2010 Seed count: 15-20
Description: This passiflora is one of the hardiest of its genus. Grows to 2-6 m depending on soil and sun. Exotic honey sweet scented flowers are followed by delicous apricot sized fruit. Lobed leaves. Aerial parts used as a medicinal.
Notes: No passiflora can tolerate water logged or standing water so ensure good drainage. Easy to grow; fast grower. Becomes a woody climber in warm climates and herbaceous in colder ones. Mulch in fall; cut down dead vines; fertilize in early spring. When establishing plants, water sparingly so the roots system is forced to spread out as with passifloras, the bigger roots system, bigger are the plants and more fruit you will enjoy. Passilforas also can spread via short under-ground roots.
Cultivation: Break dormancy: 24 hour warm water (liquid) soak, change 2x minimum to leach germination inhibitors; some ethanol to soak water leaches more inhibitors; straight orange juice best; sow 6mm deep. Opt. germ. temp: 20-25C. Keep moist; clear cover gives better success. Days to germ: 5-45.
