 Inula helenium |
Origin: Europe Zone Range: 3-9 Preferred Situation: Full sun; well draining deep garden soil. Harvest Date: Sunday 08 October, 2006
Description: 2m tall columnar herbaceous perennial. Large oblong velety leaves and frilly yellow daisy like flowers. Very pretty and stately.
Notes: Loves open sites and grows well against my wire fence, tucking itself away. Maintenaince free, just trim dead stalks in late fall to clean up. Will rarely self sow because seed is loved by small birds! Used as a medicinal. Seed is defuzzed for easier handling.
Cultivation: Sow thinly; press onto medium surface (needs light to germinate). Keep moist; success greater with plastic cover. Opt. germination temp: 15-22 C. Days to germ: 14-25.
