 Catalpa speciosa |
Native Region: Eastern North America Zone Range: 4-8 Preferred Climate: Full/semi sun; well draining deep soil. Harvest Date: Tuesday 27 December, 2011 Seed count: 20-25
Description: Delicately scented trumpet shaped frilled flair edged white flowers have internal purple spots. Blossoms are held in massive clusters and are much loved by nectar seekers. With age, trees form massive trunks and a graceful picturesque branching silhouette. Long bean like seed pods can hang on the tree all winter adding seasonal interest. Large fuzzy heart shaped mid green leaves turn a soft yellow in the fall. Reaches 15 metres in height with near equal spread. Nice rugged bark. Hardy enough for urban/street plantings.
Notes: Perfect for larger gardens. We had this tree at the edge of our lawn at the old homestead and was one of my favorite. Can withstand winter flooding and summer drought when established. Moderate to fast grower. The kids will be swinging from the branches, like we did, in little time.
Cultivation: Do not bend embryo resides in the centre of the delicate seed. Soak seeds in water for 24 hours then sow immediately on surface and tamp soil. Keep moist; plastic cover improves success. Optimum germination temp: 15-25C. Days to germinate: 14-28.
