Holodiscus discolor

Native Region: Pacific Northwest
Zone Range: 5-9
Preferred Climate: Full/semi sun; averge well draining soil.
Harvest Date: Sunday 03 September, 2006

Description:
A handsome deciduous shrub with triangular lobed leaves. Arching branches reach 3-4 meters creating a cascade look. Pendulous flower clusters look something like goat's beard (Aruncus).

Notes:
A very common native deciduous shrub in our area. When in bloom, the arched stems are clothed in creamy white flowers...a feast for nectar and pollen seekers. In winter, plant provides seed for small birds and thermal cover. Tolerates many soil types; drought tolerant. Great for erosion control with its fibrous root system. Fast growing.

Cultivation:
Prepare seed bed with a top layer of coarse sand. Surface sow by pressing seed into sand and mist well. Plastic cover improves success. Cold stratify 150 days. Keep moist. A dusting of fine mulch is helpful. Should geminate in 30-180 days at 20 C.
