 Rosa gymnocarpa |
Native Region: Pacific Northwest America Zone Range: 6-9 Preferred Climate: Shady/semi sun; well draining average soil. Harvest Date: Monday 19 September, 2011 Seed count: 15-20
Description: A shade loving species from our coastal forests. Small pink 2-3 cm diameter flowers are strongly scented with a sweet spicy perfume that shames most of my other roses (modern and antique). Small delicate well formed leaves. Fine prickles clothe older wood. Grows well under open Douglas fir stands and mixed forest. Diminuative football shaped bright scarlet hips in fall. Often taken by birds as winter food. Hard to find and rarely offered. Drought tolerant when established. No diseases noted.
Notes: Blooms pack a scent that you wish other roses had. You literally smell the roses before you see them when we walk along the garden paths especially at mid day.
Cultivation: Soak seed 24 hours in warm water. Place seed in a baggie with moist sterile medium and warm stratify (keep warm at 20 C) for 30-60 days. Sow 6 mm deep, tamp soil. Keep moist, mulch and cold stratify for 90-120 days. Another method is to soak seed 24 hours, sow 6 mm deep, tamp soil, keep moist and wait 6-18 months from fall/winter sowing. Keep seedlings in the shade as intense light/sun is lethal.
