 Nepeta cataria |
Native Region: Europe to Western Asia Zone Range: 3-9 Preferred Climate: Full/semi sun; well draining soil. Harvest Date: Thursday 10 November, 2011 Seed count: 200-250
Description:
This wonderful multibranching herbacous perennial essential in any herb garden. Fuzzy greyish green leaves tolerates full sun but does well in partial shade as well. Entire plant is aromatic. Wonderful nectar and pollen plant to keep those wonderful winged creatures in your garden.
Notes: Grows quickly and its pretty darn easy to start. Drought tolerant, provides nectar and pollen for winged creatures. Deer proof. Other than entertaining kitty, catnip is used as a medicinal for colds and insomnia. Use with care and always consult a physican before using any botanical. Protect from more enterprising kitties as mine has a tendency to sit on the partially frozen new growth in early Spring to thaw it before nibbling. She doens't like more mature growth!
Cultivation: One of the few seed selections I can confidently say that one can broad cast and successfully have lots of seedlings, so yes, it self sows readily. Otherwise, it can be sown in fall or spring. Sow 4 mm deep, tamp soil, keep moist. Light inhibits germination. Optimum germination temp: 20 C. Days to germinate: 7-10.
