 Cornus canadensis |
Syn. Chamaepericlymenum canadensis
Native Region: Pacific Northwest (Vancouver Island/QCI collection) Zone Range: 2-8 Preferred Climate: Forest edges to open woodland; well draining humus rich soil. Harvest Date: Saturday 10 September, 2011 Seed count: 12-15
Description: Gorgeous semi to evergreen ground cover. Hardy little plant to 10-18 cm tall. Bright red berries quickly follow creamy white four petaled blooms. Berries are sought after by many song birds such as Varied Thrush.
Notes: Seed will be moist cold stored. Seed could be stored dry and cold but the germination is erratic and prolonged. Found growing with Gaultheria shallon, Vaccinium, and wild strawberries. Blooms late spring to early summer. Co-evolved with our wacky west coast climate of wet cool winters and dry summers. Maintence free.
Cultivation: Sow immediately upon receiving. Will germinate in 3 months at 20 C only after 3 months of cold moist stratification at 4 C. Grow in deep nursery pots for first year or so as some seed may germinate the following stratification cycle (that's how nature works! don't fight it!). Loves being mass planted rather than single specimens.
