 Eriophorum chamissonis |
Native Region: Pacific Northwest (Queen Charlotte Islands collected) Zone Range: 5-8 Preferred Climate: Wet sites with at least half day of sun. Harvest Date: Tuesday 25 September, 2012 Seed count: 15-20
Description:
A highly decorative 70 cm tall sedge that can grow to vast colonies due to spreading rhizomes. Produces single fuzzy fruiting heads with 8 cm long fine fibres that are tawny at the base but fade to an ivory at the tips.
Notes: Crafters will be pleased to note that unripe fluffy seed heads retain the fuzz and dry extremely well for dried flower arrangements. When seed head ripens the fuzzy fibers nestling each seed becomes loose and blows away in the wind.
Cultivation: Mimic nature by soaking seed 24 hours. Barely cover seed, keep moist and break dormancy by exposing seed to 18-22 C for 2-4 wks, move to -4 to +4 C for 4-6 wks, move to 5-12 C for germination
