 Lycopersicon 'Costoluto Fiorentino' |
Origin: Italy Zone Range: all Preferred Situation: Full sun; well draining fertile evenly moist soil. Harvest Date: Sunday 24 September, 2006
Description: Italian heirloom from Tuscany. Heavily ribbed shiny red squat (others would say 'flat') fruits are dense, meaty and have an excellent balance of high sugar & acid making it a full flavored tomato. Ideal for sauce or making a legendary tomato sandwich. Indeterminate so use strong stakes for this variety! This variety is ideal for hot climates. Will produce until frost takes them. Average fruit weight is about 4 ounces.
Notes: Open pollinated. Bigger the roots at transplant (mid May) bigger the harvest. Prune sparingly. Protect from rain; water at plant base never foliage except foliar feeds. Heavy feeder; use balanced organic fertilizer. Excess nitrogen= leaves no fruit; no calcium=blossom end rot; extreme heat=blossom drop.
Cultivation: Sow 5 mm deep. Keep moist; plastic cover improves success. Opt. germination temp: 18-25 C. Days to germ: 5-10. See our tomato article under 'Confessions of a Mad Gardener' for growing information.
