Norway Maple 'Goldsworth Purple'

Acer platanoides 'Goldsworth Purple'
Acer platanoides 'Goldsworth Purple'

Native Region: Northern Continental Europe
Zone Range: 4-9
Preferred Climate: Full to semi sun; well draining deep soil.
Harvest Date: Wednesday 02 November, 2011
Seed count: 12-15

Description:
A densely foliaged deciduous tree vigorous enough for urban planting to bonsai. This selection has finely pointy lobed leaves that are purple on the top side and greenish on the reverse. Leaf stems are bright red. Mature trees not grown in containers can reach 15 meters providing cool shade over the summer. Containerized specimens will only grow to the size their root mass can support (bonsai).

Notes:
Cut test resulted in 90% viable embryos. Will be cold stored until it starts germinating! Fast growing tree. Not all seedlings will grow true to type. You can either cull them, use them for root stock for 'preferred' strains of Acer platanoides or enjoy them for the wonderful individuals they are. Sap is milky white making it entirely unsuitable for maple syrup. Germination cut test gave over 90% viability.

Cultivation:
Thinly sow seed 4 mm deep in a sandy peat top layer. Tamp firmly into medium. Some mulch is beneficial. Keep moist and cold stratify 90-120. Will germinate in 30-40 days at 20 C. Don't expose seedlings to intense direct light. When seedling's true leaf emerge, the leaf colour will tell all. Protect from nibbling varmits.

Harvest Date: Wednesday 02 November, 2011
