 Rosa multiflora 'Inermis' |
Origin: Japan Zone Range: 5-9 Preferred Situation: Full to semi sun; well draining garden soil. Harvest Date: Wednesday 20 September, 2006
Description: This thornless species is used extensively as a hardy understock for grafting roses with few rejection difficulties. If used as is, this vigorous rose can reach 5 meters in height, cover fences, trees or automotive lawnsculpture. Single palest pink flowers are borne in profusion for about 3 weeks and are much loved by all nectar and pollen seekers. Birds relish the hips in Autumn.
Notes: This rose is classed as an invasive species so either deadhead or prune late Spring. Will bloom on new wood, so don't worry about removing any potential flowers from your living fence come Spring. This rose is used mainly by major rose propagation houses, this understock is more winter hardy for northern climates of wet cold winters and heavier soils. Most roses offered by box stores are grafted onto southern rootstock more suitable for Texas, Florida, Arizona, and California. This is why most die after 2 years. Seed grown understock doesn't carry virus/pathogen loads like cuttings can.
Cultivation: Soak 24 hours in water at room temperature and sow 5 mm deep in a sand/peat sowing layer. Tamp firm. Keep moist. A top dressing of mulch can be helpful. Cold stratify 30 days then germinate at 20 C. Seedlings should emerge in 30-60 days. OR you can sow in the Autumn for germination in the Spring.
