Arisaema taiwanensis
Arisaema taiwanensis

Native Region: Taiwan
Zone Range: 6-9
Preferred Climate: Semi sun; well draining evenly moist humus rich soil.
Harvest Date: Sunday 19 December, 2010
Seed count: 10-12

Description:
Crowned 'Queen of the Arisaema' by folks in the nursery trade. Its dark maroon purple spathe has slight green and creamy coloured snakeskin mottleing and streaks near its base, but half way up the spathe, this exterior patterning disappears. The spathe tapers to a near black purple tread. A creamy white flowering spike within the spathe match the near parallel stripes on the spathe interior. This striping varies from plant to plant. Purple blotches mark the leaf stem which is topped with 8-15 somewhat broad 30 cm long leaflets that end with a drip tip.

Notes:
Arisaema need good soil moisture during Spring growing for proper flower development and pollination. Second best Arisaema of its colour class next to A. sikokanum. Blooms in mid-late May. Grows to one meter in height. All Arisaemas you see are seed grown never by divisions, so expect some variations as each plant is its own entity. Easy from seed.

Cultivation:
Seed kept in moist sand until shipped. Soak seed 24 hours; best if container grown for the first few years; sow thinly at 6 mm deep; stratify 8 weeks; optimum germination temp: 15-22 C; days to germinate: 14-35. Never let seedlings to dry out. Let form bulbs until planting out in final position. Seat plants 10 cm deep. Group plantings look best. Can be container grown.

Harvest Date: Sunday 19 December, 2010
