Ribes nigrum

Black Currant

ca$ 3.50
Seed count: 60-75
Ribes nigrum
Ribes nigrum
Native Region: Europe/North Asia
Zone Range: 3-8
Preferred Climate: Full to semi sun; well draining cool heavy soils.
Harvest Date: Monday 03 October, 2011
Seed count: 60-75

Description:
A wonderfully pratical shrub with lovely lobed maple like leaves, trusses of nectar bearing flowers for the wildlife and massive trusses of glossy black extremely edible fruits. Makes a multistemmed deciduous shrub to 2 meters tall with equal spread. I wish these would sucker, but cuttings root readily so you can easlily propagate more plants.

Notes:
Fruit set is enhanced by growing in a cool site. Fruits on spars on older wood and at tips of last year's growth so take care when pruning. A happy bush can give you about 5 kg of fruit annually. Starts bearing at 2-3 years of age. Self fertile. Fast growing; if not--it doesn't like the site as it is too dry or hot in the summer months. Yummy. Rich in phytos and vitamins.

Cultivation:
Soak seed 24 hours. Cold stratify in moist peat for 3 months. Sow 6mm deep in a sandy/loam sowing layer. Should germinate in 30-40 days.

Harvest Date: Monday 03 October, 2011
