 Trillium grandiflora plena |
Origin: Eastern North America Zone Range: 4-8 Preferred Situation: Open hardwood forests; semi sun with humus rich soil. Harvest Date: Monday 17 September, 2007
Description: A rare double flowered Trillium. Three borad leaves are held 30-45 cm above the soil surface. Flowers are snowy white then age to become a medium pink. Never pick trilliums as cut flower as this seriously compromises the health and vigor of the bulb as the nutrients/energy used to produce the flower cannot be replaced via photosynthesis.
Notes: I hoped to offer this seed last year, but I have a hunch that these plants don't recognize their own pollen so with paint brush in hand we hand pollinated using other double trilliums and bagged the flowers. Our efforts were rewarded this year.
Cultivation: Fresh seed. Cold stored in moist peat and will be shipped in moist peat to maintain viability. Sow immediately in deep pots or in situ outdoors. Will germinate in Spring the following year (18 months from autumn collection) when ambient temps reach 10-15C. Some might sprout the following. Grow seedlings in semi shade in a cool location. Protect seedlings as no trillium likes to have their roots disturbed.
