 Tulipa sprengeri |
Native Region: Turkey Zone Range: 5-9 Preferred Climate: Semi sun; well draining deep humus rich soil. Harvest Date: Monday 15 September, 2008 Seed count: 20-25
Description: A species tulip that is now extremely rare in the wild. Scarlet and gold petals brighten up any shade garden. What is so nice about this species is its one of the latest if not the latest tulip to bloom in early June. Plants can grow to 45 cm or greater.
Notes: A vigorous species that self sows well/naturalizes well in a semi shade garden. Bulb is seated deep, so take care when cultivating/digging in the garden.
Cultivation: Seed sown in the fall will germinate in the Spring whilst those sown in the spring won't germinate until the following spring, so it needs a period of cold to trigger germination. A one gallon pot is best. Sow seed 1/4 inch deep; covering with well milled peat (basically rubbed between your hands to break up the lumps) then given a dusting of chicken grit or coarse sand to keep the seeds weighed down without increasing depth. Keep moist and best if grown in a semi shady spot. I grow the seedlings in a pot until the bulbs are in their second year. What is nice is they will self seed
