 Papaver atlanticum |
Zone Range: 5-8 Preferred Climate: Full/semi sun; well draining garden soil. Harvest Date: Wednesday 17 September, 2008 Seed count: 75-100
Description: A perennial poppy with soft buff-orange flowers that appear early June with occasional rebloom until frost. Flowers are held 45 cm above a basal rosette of fuzzy soft grey-green cut foliage. Plants can grow to a good sized clump. Can flower in its first year giving you some reward for your efforts.
Notes: Self sows readily so you can make a new garden look like an established one in very little time.
Cultivation: Seems to need a wee touch of cold to germinate readily, so provide some cold stratification when sowing. Can be started in the fall in a cold frame or in situ. If starting in the spring, place seed in baggie containing moist sand and place in the fridge for 2-4 weeks then sow in flats or outdoors in situ. Surface sow. Don't let seed dry out. Germinates at 15-20 C in 2-6 weeks. Transplant at the 4-5 leaf stage as it forms a very deep taproot and doens't take moving after that.
