Acer oliverianum
Oliver's Maple
ca$ 3.50
Seed count: 12-15
Acer oliverianum
Acer oliverianum

   Syn. A. serrulatum

Native Region: Taiwan
Zone Range: 6-9
Preferred Climate: Semi sun; sheltered sites; evenly moist humus rich soil.
Harvest Date: Monday 21 November, 2011
Seed count: 12-15

Description:
Considered a southern cousin to Acer palmatum, this handsome species differs enough to warrant a position in any garden small or large. Its five deeply lobed glossy leathery leaves emerge reddish in spring becoming dark green during summer then flushed crimson in autumn. The smooth jade green bark is marked with fine white waxy stripes. Grows to 20 meters tall in the wilds of Taiwan but takes on a smaller 5-8 meter form in cultivation. Needs a sheltered spot out of the wind in marginally hardy zones with evenly moist humus rich soil. Needs supplimental water until established.

Notes:
Cut rate: 90% viable embryos. I haven't seen this tree bush out as it takes on an upright form...kinda like bamboo.

Cultivation:
Will be cold moist stored as all Acer seed lose viability when dry. Intolerant to soaking more than 12 hours. Sow thinly at 6 mm deep in a sandy peat layer; tamp firm. Cold strafify for 60-120 days. Keep moist. Add a thin layer of fine mulch. Don't let germinating seed freeze, dry out or migrate onto the medium surface as this is fatal. After cold stratification period is over, expose to Spring conditions to promote germination. Good indirect light is best for seedlings. Protect seed/seedlings from varmits. I prick out seedlings when dormant and grow in individual pots for first 2-3 years for best results.

Harvest Date: Monday 21 November, 2011
