Description:
This is the famous pine tree that bears the extremely edible pine nuts. Often seen gracing Mediterranean postcards. Bright green needles are very attractive. Young plants have a rounded form and are usually sold as a potted Christmas ornamental. Mature trees take on a symmetrical umbrella form and quasi-sinuous trunk. Rugged bark arranged in large plates. Grows relatively quick when established (3-5 metres/5 years). Hates wet feet. Drought tolerant. Can grow to 15 meters tall with a 5-8 metre canopy. Relatively maintenance free. Bonsai. It is a two-needle pine.

Notes:
One of the humankind’s oldest food plants! Rich, nutritious, protein rich, nutty tasting seeds are essential in many dishes throughout the Mediterranean and the Near East. Botanists’ place the origins of this species on Spain's Iberian Peninsula but with humankind’s help was planted along southern European trade routes as a living larder.

Cultivation:
Soak 24 hours in cool water. Place in moist medium (equal parts peat and perlite) in a resealable baggie. Place in a warm 20-25C (no direct light) for quick and uniform germination. Easy!
