 Philadephus purpurascens |
Native Region: China Zone Range: 6-10 Preferred Climate: Full to semi sun; average well draining soil Harvest Date: Friday 02 December, 2011 Seed count: 60-75
Description: A shrubby multistemmed species. Loose clusters of sweetly scented white flowers slowly breakforth from purple calyces, very nice. Bright yellow boss of staemens attract nectar and pollen seekers. Serrated dark green leaves. Vigorous growth, blooms on new wood, so its best pruned after flowering is finished in early August. Tolerates summer dry conditions when established. Might get 4 meters in height with equal spread.
Cultivation: Extremely fine seed. Add a small amount of sand to seed, mix well and spread thinly on prepared sowing surface. Mist in. Seed needs light to germinate so do not cover. Place a clear cover over your sowing pot/tray and give 8-12 weeks of cold stratification (2-4C) but do not let freeze. Germinate at 15-20 C when cold stratification period is over. Never let super tiny seedlings dry out nor should you over water them hense the sand for drainage! Yes, there is logic to my maddness!
