 Cunninghamia lanceolata |
Native Region: China Zone Range: 7-10 Preferred Climate: Full to semi sun; well draining average acidic soil. Harvest Date: Tuesday 10 November, 2009 Seed count: 30-40
Description: Tho widly grown in China for its rot resistant timber, this species is rarely seen here in the west except in botanical gardens. Lovely enough to draw comment. Elongated flat blue green evergreen needles/leaves gradually become bronze with advanced age before falling. Pyrimidal form and graceful downward arching branching. Not tolerant to prolonged drought so dryer the site, the more shade this species requires.
Cultivation: Soak seed 24 hours. Cold stratify (4C) in a baggie of moistened finely milled peat moss for 30 days. Germinate at 20-25C, prick out seedlings and transplant when roots emerge. Germination might take 30 to 180 days, so keep watch. Don't let seedlings dry out and provide 16 hours of light for vigorous growth.
