 Trillium erectum |
Native Region: Eastern North America Zone Range: 3-8 Preferred Climate: Semi sun to dappled shade; well draining humus rich soil. Harvest Date: Wednesday 26 August, 2009 Seed count: 20-25
Description: Lovely Eastern North American woodland perennial that can make large clumps when happy. Midgreen trifoliate leaves and elegant dark red flowers with near black seed capsule. White pollen provides quite a dramatic contrast. Much loved by our bumblebees and a curiosity to our hummingbirds attracted to their colour. Our patch covers the legs of tree peonies and Daphne. Easy to grow and undemanding.
Notes: Open pollinated seed. Already pretreated with our Skookum Grow solution for uniform germination.
Cultivation: Seed looses viability when stored dry so we store it in moist peat! Upon arrival, sow in a baggie with 2-3 tbsp of moistened peat. Cold stratify 3 months, then warm stratify 1-3 months. Place baggie back into the fridge for another 2 months of cold stratification, I've had a few sprouted in the fridge so keep an eye on the seed prickout and plant the seedlings. Give another round of warm stratification; often germination is quite prompt (1-3 weeks). Prick out and transplant into pots or a nursery bed. Do not let seedlings freeze! This breviated warm/cold stratifcation cycle shortens the normal 18 month cycle by half or better. Trials show that seed will not germinate unless given warm stratification. Never disturb seedlings for at least 2 years after transplanting.
