This lovely evergreen fern has triangular, lace-like fronds produced on black stalks. Grows 6 inches high and spreads at a rate of 6-8 inches a year. Makes a wonderful groundcover in the woodland garden. Drought-tolerant once established if grown in part shade.
Evergreen fern with shuttlecock-like crowns of glossy, bright green fronds to 16 inches long, which have heart-shaped bases and wavy margins. Height and spread 24 inches. Grow in humusy, rich and moist but well-drained soil, with added grit, in part shade.
A small fern suitable for shaddy rock gardens. For maximum freshness, please keep fern spore refrigerated in its original packaging until it is time to plant.
The shiny bright to mid green leaves remain through most winters, to be gradually replaced by new growth in the spring that has a distinctive coppery colour.
This fern is still moderately rare in cultivation, and is often mistaken for its close relative Dryopteris erythrosora but has larger leaves and may not prove quite as hardy. The red colouration of young leaves is most striking.
This fern is the source of 'fiddleheads', a vegetable delicacy available fresh for only a brief time each spring, but for gourmets who know their delights, well worth the wait.
