Rubus spectabilis
Rubus spectabilis
Native Region: western north America from Alaska to California
Zone Range: 5-8
Preferred Climate: temperate
Harvest Date: Sunday 23 June, 2013
Seed count: 20-25

This thicket-forming deciduous shrub has palmate leaves and bears purple-pink flowers, followed by edible orange-red berries. Height and spread of this British Columbia native species is 6 feet.

For maximum freshness, please keep seed refrigerated in its original packaging until it is time to plant. A warm stratification of 20–30 °C is necessary for spring-sown seeds, although fall sowing provides best germination. Germination is improved if seeds are scarified with sulfuric acid for 20–60 minutes or with a 1% solution of sodium hypochlorite for seven days prior to cold stratification. Seeds need 90 days of cold stratification at 36–41 °F to break seed dormancy. Sow in ground in drills, cover lightly with soil, and mulch over winter. Grow in well-drained, moderately-fertile soil in full sun.

Harvest Date: Sunday 23 June, 2013
