 Mahonia aquifolium |
Native Region: Western North America Zone Range: 07-10 Preferred Climate: Temperate woodland Harvest Date: Tuesday 03 August, 2010 Seed count: 15-20
Description: Glossy green leaves are flushed red in the winter then topped by bright yellow flowers in the spring. The purple-blue fruit are edible and excellent for making jam and preserves.
Notes: Avoid transplanting the seedlings in their first year, as this may result in leaf loss. Seedlings that appear to be nothing more than sticks may yet develop leaves again.
Cultivation: Sow fresh seed in containers in the autumn and keep outdoors. If your seed order is in the winter or spring, stratify in the cold for six weeks - either outdoors or in the refrigerator. Sow stratified seed in containers in a coldframe or other moderately sheltered location. Grow on in any moderately fertile, humus rich soil. Keep seed refrigerated in its original packaging until it is time to plant.
