Stewartia ovata
Stewartia ovata

Native Region: Southeast United States, Appalachian mountains
Zone Range: 05-09
Preferred Climate: Temperate
Harvest Date: Sunday 01 November, 2009
Seed count: 15-20

Description:
This deciduous large shrub or small tree has flaking gray-orange bark and oval green leaves that turn orange, red or gold in fall. In midsummer, white camellia-like flowers with yellow stamens appear. Height 15 feet.

Notes:
Stewartias are trees of such remarkable qualities that it’s surprising they’re not more widely available.

Cultivation:
Plant seed in containers in a coldframe in autumn or spring. Scarification and cold stratification may improve germination if seed is planted in the spring. Grow on in moist but well-drained neutral to acidic humusy soil in full sun or light shade. For maximum freshness, please keep seed refrigerated in its original packaging until it is time to plant.

Harvest Date: Sunday 01 November, 2009
