Rhododendron yakushimanum
Rhododendron yakushimanum

Native Region: Japan - Yakushima Island
Zone Range: 07-10
Preferred Climate: Temperate open woodland
Harvest Date: Sunday 28 November, 2010
Seed count: 40-50

Description:
Generally a small to medium evergreen shrub, with narrow obovate leaves with a distinctive indumentum, initially on all surfaces, but exfoliating on the upper surfaces leaving dark green, almost glossy, leaves. The flowers, produced in spring, are tubular with spreading lobes to 3.5cm (2in) wide and as long. Flower color varies from plant to plant, from white through pinks, roses and even some rich red and bicolour forms. This species has been a favourite of hybridizers because of its compact and often symmetrical form, as well as its relative hardiness.

Cultivation:
Rhododendron seeds, small and delicate as they may appear, require scarification to break through the tough seed coat, as this allows moisture in to enter the seed and begin the germination process. See detailed instructions in the article "Starting Rhododendron Seeds" at www.plantexplorers.com/vandusen/articles. Grow in moist, well-drained humusy acidic soil in sun to part shade. For maximum freshness, please keep seed refrigerated in its original packaging until it is time to plant.

Harvest Date: Sunday 28 November, 2010
