 Dianthus arenarius |
Native Region: northern and eastern Europe Zone Range: 3-8 Preferred Climate: northern temperate to alpine Harvest Date: Tuesday 01 August, 2006 Seed count: 25-30
Description: Slender evergreen perennial with bright green leaves which grows to 6-12 inches high with a 12-inch spread. Produces solitary, fragrant, deeply fringed white flowers about an inch across, often tinged purple at the bases, from early to midsummer.
Cultivation: For maximum freshness, please keep seed refrigerated in its original packaging until it is time to plant. Sow in early spring into pots using standard soil-less seed compost, either peat or peat substitute. Cover with perlite or vermiculite, place in a cold frame or under protection at 20-22 degrees Celsius. Germination takes 2-3 weeks or 7-10 days with warmth. Grow in well-drained soil in full sun. In spring, side-dress established plants with a balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer. Avoid organic mulches which can encourage fungal diseases; use stone chips, sand or gravel to keep leaves from contacting the soil. Deadhead as blooms fade.
