 Picea likiangensis |
Native Region: South and West China, Southeast Tibet Zone Range: 06-08 Preferred Climate: Temperate Harvest Date: Sunday 25 November, 2007 Seed count: 25-30
Description:
Growing as tall as 30m (100ft) in the wild, this conifer is likely to remain somewhat smaller in cultivation. The almost pendent new growth is bright green and highlights the violet cones very well. Foliage matures to dark green while the cones will mature to rich brown.
Notes: A somewhat variable species, the Lijang Spruce is nonetheless a magnificent tree and suitable for both garden and bonsai culture.
Cultivation: Sow seed in containers in a coldframe in autumn or spring. Cold stratification will improve germination if seed is planted in the spring. Grow on in deep, moist but well-drained, neutral to acidic soil in full sun. Flowers earlier if planted in sandy soil. For maximum freshness, please keep seed refrigerated in its original packaging until it is time to plant.
